Cervicogenic Headaches

Aches and pain can sneak up on you when you least expect it. However, Dr. James ''Billy'' Wright and Dr. Tyler Wright at Wright Family Chiropractic are only a phone call away if you are struggling with general chiropractic complaints including migraines or a headache in Cedar Park and Austin, TX.

What Is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache (CGH) is classified by the International Headache Society as a secondary headache. This means the headache is not the primary illness, but rather an indication of an underlying disease, illness, or condition causing referred head pain.

CGH is thought to be caused by a problem in the cervical spine. The cervical spine is the neck area in the human body. It starts at the base of the skull and ends in the shoulder area, where it connects to the thoracic spine.

What Are the Symptoms of a Cervicogenic Headache?

This type of headache is usually chronic and recurrent. While it’s commonly associated with a neck injury or condition, these are not the only reasons you may experience symptoms of a CGH.

The primary symptom is pain that often starts in the neck and affects one side of your head. It may also be accompanied by a reduced range of motion in the cervical spine. The pain itself is dull and achy and may be constant or steadily worsen.

CGHs can be tricky to diagnose. This is why if you are struggling with long-term headaches, we recommend that you seek care to help you identify the underlying cause and how to treat it.

Dr. Billy and Dr. Tyler Wright are vastly experienced in treating neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including primary or secondary headaches. Residents in Cedar Park and Austin, TX, are lucky to have Wright Family Chiropractic in their communities if they need chiropractic care to provide pain relief and increase their range of motion.

Treatment for a Cervicogenic Headache

There are several ways to treat a cervicogenic headache, but it’s essential to receive the correct diagnosis and establish the underlying cause so that you can be treated correctly and effectively.

Conservatively, spinal adjustments and therapeutic exercise are usually the first line of treatment. Notably, therapeutic exercise may worsen the pain at first, and we recommend that you speak to your provider about how this can be mitigated.
